Democracy in Europe Movement 25 (DiEM25)

11/02/2016

On the 9th of February, 2016 Yanis Varoufakis and Srecko Horvat launched a movement called Democracy in Europe Movement 25 (DiEM25) in Berlin.

What is DiEM25?

DiEM25 is a grassroots movement campaigning for a more democratic European Union by the year 2025.

Within 10 years, DiEM25 aims to achieve four goals:

  • To introduce full transparency in EU decision-making.
  • To solve Europe’s economic crisis within 12 months.
  • To establish a new European Constitutional Assembly within two years.
  • To ensure decisions are being made through this Constitutional Assembly by the year 2025.
  •
To achieve these reforms, DiEM25 is asking European citizens to join its movement and help to ensure a free, fair and democratic future for all.

The official website includes the full text of manifesto of the new organisation, which is entitled A Manifesto For Democratising Europe. There is also more back ground material available here.

Here is the Press Conference following the launch of DiEM25 featuring former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

Here is the live stream video of the DiEM25 launch event (the action starts about two minutes into this stream with a short video about DiEM25 followed by many speeches).

Newsweek has an interview with Varoufakis, about the launch of DiEM25, entitled “Without More Democracy Europe Is Doomed”

The Independent has an article on DiEM25 entitled “Yanis Varoufakis: Europe is sliding back into the 1930s and we need a new movement”

On the 10th of February Yanis Varoufakis was interviewed on Channel 4 news about the connections between the victories of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, and the movement for democracy in Europe.
